Our Story

fish & Chips Runs in Our Family

The Petrou Brothers are Peter and Mark Petrou.

Born in 1969 and 1971 into the trade, The Petrou Brothers parents Joan and Steve had opened their first fish and chip shop several years before in South East London.

Growing up in and around fish and chips, the Brothers started in the family business before finishing school in Chatteris in 1984 and took over running it in 1987. Mark Studied Marketing at Greenwich University and Peter completed the city and guilds Chefs qualification 7061/2 at P.R.C.

In 2006 The Petrou Brothers won the Seafish Industry Authority UK title of Number One Fish and Chip Shop of the Year at the shop in Chatteris.

Over the next decade, the Petrou Brothers opened a further 5 shops in March, Leverington, Peterborough, Ely and Cambridge as well as 2 pubs, a Cinema and a Deli. In 2010 Mark wrote his first book about Fish and Chips and in 2013 won the Outstanding Achievement Award at the fish and chip shop of the year competition ceremony hosted by Seafish for his online community website which had attracted over 7000 chip shops as members.

In the years that followed, Mark and Peter have continued to work in the fish and chip sector as consultants and assessors. Mark has travelled the world opening fish and chip shops for corporate clients and also trains at a purpose built facility in Market Deeping for both experienced operators and new people entering the industry.

Now they’ve more or less sold up everything except the one shop where it all began – the Chatteris chippy still remains…

Still frying in traditional beef dripping for its unique flavor and crispness on the very latest HE pan technology that is environmentally friendly and allows the Petrou Brothers to produce incredibly low fat fish and chips (less than 7% fat and less than 700 calories for a regular fish and chips with mushy peas).

The Petrou Brothers employ local people and support local initiatives like local football teams and Chatteris in Bloom. We use locally grown Maris Piper and Challenger potatoes to keep food miles as low as possible and to keep money in the town and the local economy. The flour in our secret batter recipe is milled locally too and all of the fish we fry is sourced responsibly from sustainable stocks to ensure that there’s plenty of fish in the sea for future generations to come.

Eat in as our guests – after all – it’s the very best way to enjoy a pan perfect portion or take away, click and collect or have it delivered – the choice is yours but rest assured, we guarantee you service with a smile and a dedication to our craft that has earned a reputation in our industry as experts in our field (and ocean).
